How to Build a Beach Volleyball Court

Step One

Design or Plan

  • Determine How Many Courts you need. The NCAA requires two courts and recommends three to host a competition
  • Determine Required Court Dimensions
  • View Required Beach Volleyball Dimensions for Competition and Recreation
  • Courts should run north/south with the net running east/west
  • Spectator seating, lighting, rinse station
  • Obtain pricing from local excavating/landscape companies
  • Consider wind barriers, shaded areas for players and/or spectators

Step Two

Sand & Gravel

  • Your local excavating/landscape contractor will aid in sand and gravel procurement
  • Sand specifications
  • Sand Volume – Approximately 5,200 cubic feet of washed sand
  • Gravel specifications – #57 gravel
  • Gravel volume – Approximately 2,600 cubic feet of gravel

Step Three

Equipment

Step Four

Dig. Frame. Drain.

  • Dig your court
  • Choose your framing material – concrete, wood or rubber
  • Frame your court
  • Lay perforated pvc pipe wrapped with 2 layers of landscaping fabric
  • Lay your pipe so the water drains away from the court

Step Five

Anchor Your System

  • Choose your anchor system
  • Direct mount into a concrete pier
  • Anchor system with a concrete pier

Step Six

Layer Substrate

  • Lay and level the sand
  • When the poles and piers are set, place the gravel on the court
  • Add a layer of landscape fabric over the gravel
  • If you are using an anchor system, place the poles in the sleeves
