How to Setup an Indoor Volleyball Net System

Let’s take a look at everything you will need to set up your new indoor volleyball net system:

• Two volleyball poles
• Crank Handle
• Two volleyball pole safety pads
• A volleyball net
• Six hook and loop net tension side straps, or side ties if you prefer
• Two volleyball net lock tighteners and net lock covers
• Two dowel rods
• Volleyball Net Height Chain
• Two Volleyball Net Antennas 

FLOOR PLATE REVIEW AT THE START OF VOLLEYBALL SEASON

At the beginning of each volleyball season, simply take a knife and cut around the rim of both floorplates if your floor was re-finished in the offseason. Oftentimes, gymnasium floors have been resurfaced and the floorplates need to be set free from any wax or flooring materials left on the floorplate. Open the floorplate and make sure the sleeve is clear of debris and vacuumed clean, and repeat on the other side. 

VOLLEYBALL POLE SLEEVE ADAPTERS

If you are upgrading to Sports Imports volleyball poles from another brand, you may need a sleeve adapter. Simply slide the adapter sleeve into the sleeve with the set screw facing toward the court. Using the provided Allen wrench, secure the sleeve in place by tightening the set screw. Once the adapter sleeve is secure, it does not need to be removed. 

When you place the volleyball pole into the sleeve, make certain the Sports Imports logo is facing the inside of the court and the pulley wheel is in line with the center court line.

HOW TO ADJUST VOLLEYBALL POLES FOR PROPER NET HEIGHT

Adjusting the volleyball pole for proper net height is simple. Look for the clear markings on the volleyball poles for men’s, women’s, and junior’s heights on the upper telescoping section of the volleyball pole and line up the appropriate marking. The net height markings on the SI-1 carbon volleyball pole, CO8 carbon volleyball pole, AL7 aluminum volleyball pole, and DE11 steel volleyball pole are shown here:

Additional holes on the volleyball poles are for training purposes, and to accommodate various floor sleeve depths. To secure the volleyball pole, insert the stop pin into the proper hole until the ball locking mechanism comes through the other side. For the SI-1 and AL7 volleyball poles, the pin is inserted into the bottom hole. For the DE11 pole, the pin is inserted into the top hole. 

Achieving Proper Net Height with the SI-1 Carbon Volleyball Pole:

To get the respective net height for either Junior’s (7’), Women’s (7’4 ⅛”) or Men’s (7’11 ⅝”), the J, W or M markings on the SI1 Carbon Volleyball Pole will need to be viewed through the top viewing hole with the pin being inserted into the bottom hole, as shown above. 

Achieving Proper Net Height with the AL7 Aluminum Pole: 

The J, W or M markings on the AL7 Aluminum Volleyball Pole will need to be viewed just above the collar with the pin being inserted when the bottom hole lines up within the lower section. For women’s net height, the W on the upper telescoping section will be above the lower telescoping section. The AL7 volleyball pole contains a line under the W that helps the person setting up the net system visually judge that the line is even with the lower section of the pole. The pin needs to be inserted in the bottom hole after the line for the Women’s net height is set.  The J and M markings will be slightly above the collar before the pin is inserted. 

Achieving Proper Net Height with the DE11 Steel Pole:

The J, W or M markings on the DE11 Steel Volleyball Pole will need to be viewed just above the collar with the pin being inserted when the top hole lines up with the lower section. Please note the engraved markings on the steel poles next to holes will not be the exact hole used. The J, W, or M markings must be above the collar with the pin going into the top hole of the lower section. 

SETTING UP YOUR VOLLEYBALL NET

Carefully unpack and stretch out your volleyball net between the volleyball poles on the floor. Before each use, it is important to thoroughly inspect the net and make certain the cables are free from nicks and fray. Do not tie additional knots in the top cable. Next, insert the dowel rod into the slit in the net and repeat this step on the other side. Once your dowel rods are inserted, you will not need to repeat this step again. 

It is time to place your volleyball net on the poles. Start with a non ratchet volleyball pole. Simply place the factory formed loop on to the pole and bring the cable above the pulley wheel. Now take the other end of the net and place the top cable over the pulley wheel and pull the net cable down to the ratchet. Tie a slip-knot loop and hook the cable on the ratchet hook. Please note, it is important to always stand to the side of the pole, never behind the pole. Turn the ratchet crank handle clockwise to take the slack out of the cable. Always keep an eye on the volleyball net cable to ensure it remains in the groove of the pulley wheel. Continue cranking the ratchet until the volleyball net has full tension. Center the volleyball net between the poles.

ATTACHING VOLLEYBALL NET LOCKS

Attaching the volleyball net locks to the bottom cable is simple. There is a plunger ball-bearing mechanism that grabs the rope. Pull the plunger and while holding it out, slip the rope into the small end of the net lock and through the other end. Wrap the loose end of the rope around the volleyball pole and tie it to the metal dog clip. Then, attach the dog clip to the net lock. Repeat this step on the other side. The net lock should be positioned close to each volleyball pole before tightening but never circling around the pole. Pull both volleyball net locks tight.

HOW TO ATTACH VOLLEYBALL NET TENSION STRAPS

Your volleyball net will arrive with side ties attached, and a separate package of hook and loop side straps. Most of our customers prefer using net tension side straps. To use the side straps, simply remove the side ties, insert the straps through the grommets at the top, bottom, and middle of each side. Wrap the strap around the pole beneath the cable, never over it and fasten. Extra long hook and loop side straps may also be attached to the pole to accommodate a larger spread between the volleyball net and pole.

Next, it’s important to add net lock covers over your volleyball net locks. This ensures proper safety measures for your athletes, and prepares your team for matchday.

HOW TO ATTACH VOLLEYBALL NET ANTENNAS

Now it’s time to put on the volleyball net antennas and check net height. Begin by loosening the notch at the top and bottom of the antenna. We recommend placing a net chain at the court line to ensure proper alignment of the antenna. Add the net antenna by placing the top hook over the net. Tighten to secure the antenna to the volleyball net. Secure the lower portion by slipping the rope into the clamp. Tighten to secure the lower portion of the antenna to the volleyball net. Make sure the antenna is in line with the boundary line on the volleyball court. It’s important to always attach the top first and bottom second. And when taking off antennas, to remove the bottom first, and the top second. 

HOW TO CHECK VOLLEYBALL NET HEIGHT

To check for proper volleyball net height, slip the hook of the net chain over the top volleyball net cable and pull down to ensure the hook is properly secured, then let the chain drop to the floor. If the bottom of the net chain is touching the floor, your volleyball net is too low. To adjust net height, you will need to tighten the net again to ensure the beads are not touching the floor. Check the net height by using the net chain on both volleyball court boundary lines at the antennas and also check the height at the center of the volleyball net. The net chain beads should not be touching the floor at all three locations of the volleyball net. 

HOW TO ATTACH VOLLEYBALL POLE SAFETY PADS

The final step of setting up your volleyball net system is to attach the volleyball pole safety pads. The safety pads attach to the pole with the open portion of the pad facing the outside of the court. This allows for easy access to the ratchet on the pole in case volleyball net tension needs to be adjusted before, during, or after a match. The volleyball pole pads are easily secured with hook and loop fasteners. *Please note, the Sports Imports logo should be facing the inside of the volleyball court and the opening of the volleyball pole padding should be facing the outside of the court.
